What is IELTS?

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as a language of communication. It is one of the most widely-recognized English tests. In the previous year it was estimated that more than 3 million candidates took the test.

What organisations accept IELTS results?

IELTS results are accepted by more than 11,500 organisations worldwide, including universities, employers, professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies. Click here to learn more。

Who designs the questions for IELTS?

IELTS is co-owned by IDP: IELTS Australia, British Council and Cambridge Assessment English. While IDP: IELTS Australia and British Council are responsible for hosting and implementing the test around the world, Cambridge English Language Assessment is in charge of designing and developing the questions for IELTS.

Why are there Academic and General Training modules in IELTS?

There are two modules of IELTS to cater to test-takers with different needs. Academic is for people applying for higher education or professional registration in an English speaking environment, whereas General Training is for those who are going to English speaking countries for secondary education, work experience or training programs.

What is the test format for IELTS? How much time does it take to complete the test?

The IELTS test assesses your English abilities in Listening (30 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes) and Speaking (11-14 minutes). The whole test should be completed within 3 hours. Listening, Reading and Writing are tested back-to-back in one morning, while the Speaking test might be scheduled on the same day or a different date.

Where can I take IELTS?

IDP IELTS host test sessions in Taipei, Banqiao, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Chiayi, Tainan and Kaohsiung. Occasionally we also work with universities and offer on-campus IELTS.

How much does the test cost?

  • IELTS (Academic or General Training): NT$7,500

  • IELTS for UKVI (Academic or General Training): NT$8,100

  • IELTS Life Skills :NT$5,900

How can I sign up for IELTS?

There are 3 ways to sign up an IELTS test:

  • Register online:https://ielts.idp.com/book

  • Register in person at IDP offices in Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung

  • Register in an authorised agents near you

Registration is completed. Why can’t I view my photo in the confirmation email nor the time for the Speaking test?

Confirmation email is for your reference only. It is not served as an ID verification, hence no photo attached. The time for your Speaking test will be emailed to you 2 days prior to the test day, and then again posted at the test venue on the test day.

What should I do if I need to postpone or cancel my test?

  • Any transfer of test date/venue/module 5 weeks prior to the test date will be allowed once, free of charge. However, if it is a refund request, 20% of your test fee will be charged as service fee.

  • Any transfer of test date/venue/module within 5 weeks of the test date will have to be approved. If approved, 20% of your test fee will be charged as service fee. Candidates will be asked to provide supporting documents as proof.

If I happen to be sick or cannot attend the test, can I do it on another day?

If you are absent on the test day with no reason, you will not be able to re-take the test on another day. If your absence is caused by serious diseases, hospitalisation, military duties or funerals, please submit your application of change of test date within 5 days after the test. With 20% of service charge, we will assist you to reschedule your test.

Can I register for another test right after taking one?

There is no policy forbidding candidates take back-to-back tests. However, please note that we encourage you to be thoroughly ready for each test.

Is there an age limit in IELTS?

There is no such limitation. However, we’d still advise that you should be at least 16 years old. For IELTS for UKVI candidates, if you are under 17 years old, you will be asked to present a signed parental consent form on the test day.

Test day questions

Will the IELTS test be completed within one day?

Yes. After we start the test at 9am in the morning, candidates will do the Listening test first (40 minutes), followed by Reading (60 minutes), and eventually Writing (60 minutes). The written test should end between 12-12:30pm. There will be no break in between. In the afternoon, candidates will take turns to have the Speaking test with Examiners. The speaking test time is arranged by IELTS registration system.  The latest speaking test time could be 8:40pm. Only in very rare occasions candidates will be asked to take their Speaking test on a different date.

What happens if there is a natural disaster on the test day?

IDP IELTS will schedule another suitable date for the test.

What can I bring to the test venue?

You must have your passport with you. You can bring one pencil and one eraser into the test room. Other stationery will not be allowed. Mobile phones and watches must be kept inside your personal belongings, and stored outside of the test room. If you have further questions, please call our toll-free service line 0800-558-768, or arrive at the test venue early to consult our invigilator. If you bring in any item that is not allowed into the test room with you, you will be automatically disqualified and will not receive a Test Report Form.

How many accents should I expect in Listening and Speaking?

In view of the fact that IELTS is an international test, do expect different accents from major English-speaking countries.

Will any instructions be given during the Listening test?

Before the start of the Listening test, you will have the chance to adjust the volume of the speakers. Please pay attention when the recording is being played, as you will only hear the recording once. Once the recording finishes, you will have 10 minutes to transfer your answers from the question booklet onto the answer sheet.

Do candidates also have 10 minutes to transfer answers in the Reading test?

No. The Reading test will last for 60 minutes, and all questions must be answered within this period.

Can I use a ball pen to answer?

No, please only use one HB pencil to answer.

Can I take notes in the Listening and Reading test?

You can take notes on the question booklets.

How is the Speaking test conducted?

IDP IELTS will arrange you to have an one-on-one interview with a trained Examiner. You will need to bring your passport with you for ID verification. All interviews will be recorded for filing.

Result questions

How can I preview my test result online?

You can preview your test scores online at the following link at 5pm on the 13th day (3-5 days if CD-IELTS) after your test : https://ielts.idp.com/results/check-your-result

How is IELTS scored?

IELTS results are designed to be simple and easy to understand. They are reported as band scores on a scale from 1 (the lowest) to 9 (the highest). A score is given for each test component – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. These individual scores are then averaged and rounded to produce an overall band score.

How do you define if I pass or fail the test?

There is no “pass” or “fail” in IELTS. However, every school/company that accepts IELTS score will have a minimum requirement on your test result. Please consult your chosen organisation in advance to understand their requirement.

When can I receive my test result?

Test Report Forms will be ready for release on the 13th day (3-5 days if CD-IELTS)after the test. You may choose whether to receive it by post or by collecting it yourself at our offices.

If my Speaking test is scheduled on a different date prior to or after my written test, when will I receive my test result?

Your Test Report Form will be ready for release on the 13th day (3-5 days if CD-IELTS) after your written test.

How long will my test result be valid for?

Your IELTS Test Report Form will be valid for 2 years.

Can I apply for a new Test Report Form if I lose my original copy?

We cannot issue a new copy to you directly. But as long as your test result is still valid (within 2 years after the test), you can still apply for a copy and we will email/mail it to the schools/companies of your choice.

What should I do if I have an enquiry on my test result?

Within 6 weeks after your test, you can apply for Enquiry on Results. Please check the “Enquiry on Results” webpage for detailed instructions. The process might take up to 10 weeks and during this period you will not be able to apply to any schools/companies with your test result. Please make sure you will be able to wait for 10 weeks before considering an Enquiry on Results.

If I take my test in another country, can I apply for extra Test Report Forms with IDP Taiwan?

No. We operate on individual systems in each country. Therefore, we cannot check your test result or issue Test Report Form when you take your test in another country.

Computer-delivered IELTS questions

How many types of test are there for the Computer-delivered IELTS?

There are the Academic and the General Training test for both IELTS and IELTS for UKVI.

Is the test day schedule different from the Paper-based IELTS?

There are 2 parts to the computer-delivered IELTS test, the morning part and afternoon part.

  • For the morning part, students check in at 8:30am, start the exam at 9:00am and should finish around 11:30am – 12:00 pm.

  • For the afternoon part, students check in at 1:30pm, start the exam at 2:00pm and finish around 4:30pm – 5:00pm.

Paper-based IELTS only have morning parts. Students check in at 8:30am, start the exam at 9:00am and should finish around 12:00am – 12:30 pm.

How often is the IELTS computer-delivered test?

More than 20 tests per month, and an average of 5-6 tests a week.

How many locations are there for the Computer-delivered IELTS in Taiwan? What is the maximum number of participants in one location at one time?

There are 5 locations you can choose from in Taiwan (2 in Taipei, 1 in Taichung, 1 in Tainan, 1 in Kaohsiung). The maximum number of students for the IDP Taipei office, IDP Taichung office, and IDP Kaohsiung office is 24, 12, and 12 respectively.

Does it take all day to have a Computer-delivered IELTS? Is it the same as the Paper-based IELTS, starting in the morning?

Computer-delivered IELTS have a morning part and an afternoon part for candidates. Based on the number of candidates participating at one time, candidates could possibly finish the test in a shorter time.

When will the speaking test occur in Computer-delivered IELTS?

When registering for the Computer-delivered IELTS, candidates need to choose a time for the speaking test.

Is computer-delivered IELTS priced differently?

The price is the same for the computer-delivered test and paper-based test.

Are the test questions the same as the Paper-based IELTS? Can you provide any samples?

What are the conditions surrounding the IELTS computer-delivered test?

You’ll be provided with your own set of headphones and a disposable cover, in a partitioned cubicle.

What should I do on the test day?

Can I choose the size of the text?

With the computer-delivered IELTS, you can adjust the settings to your preference.

Can I make notes when taking the listening section?

Yes, paper and pencils will be provided to take notes while having the test.

Can I go back to change my answers during the test?

Yes, during the test, you can change previous answers.

Can I adjust the volume while doing the listening test?

Yes, there is a volume bar at the top of the screen, on the right-hand side. This allows you to adjust the volume of the listening section to a level that suits you.

How much time will be left after the listening questions have finished playing?

You will have 2 minutes to review answers once the section is over.

Can I take notes during the reading section?

You are able to highlight sections of the test as well as make notes on the section you have highlighted.

Will paragraphs and questions be on the same page on the screen in the reading section?

Yes, they will be on the same page so the candidate can view them simultaneously.

Can I go back to change my answers during the reading section?

Yes, during the test, you can change previous answers.

Can I take notes during the writing section?

You are able to highlight sections of the test as well as make notes on the section you have highlighted.

Is the Speaking test done by computer as well?

No, the Speaking test is done in person, same as the paper-based IELTS.

When can I get my computer-delivered IELTS test results?

Your results will be available online 3-5 days after the exam, a SMS message with your score will be sent to you as well.
